being humble is nothing to be proud of.
american is driven by selfishness, as the old goran gekko saying"
"greed is good..."

I think it depends on what you are greedy for and how you are greedy.
If Yao is greedy for money, and gets that by any means, then that's BAD!
However, if Yao is greedy to get more rebounds and score, that is good though~~

Partly because he's Chinese. But aside from being a Chinese player, he's one who is highly respected at the highest level of the sport. He has the potential/ability to do great things on the court, to be one of the best ever. He breaks stereotypes that Asian players suffer from; he's tall, dunks, and dominates. Quite simply, he improves the image of Asians in western eyes.

Ya, I like Yao's humbleness too.
Now the question is:
If Yao is not 7'6, would you still respect him?

Probably not as much because it's his extraordinary height and how unique he is for someone his height (physically and personality-wise) that adds to his allure. Would I respect him? Yes, he's a class act and a kindhearted guy in a league that needs someone like him to show that the NBA is not only full of greedy, borderline retarded thugs.

Most professional athletes are about ego and ambition. Yao seems to be more about things like duty and honor.
