COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - Acclaimed actor, singer and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte was named a goodwill ambassador on Thursday for the upcoming Hans Christian Andersen bicentennial celebrations, organizers said.

Belafonte is the 47th celebrity tapped to help increase awareness about the famed fairy tale writer ahead of celebrations marking his 200th birthday in 2005. He will receive a diploma from Culture Minister Brian Mikkelsen on Aug. 6 at Copenhagen's downtown Tivoli amusement park.

The 77-year-old Belafonte - famous for his blend of rhythm and calypso-inspired music - is well known for his role as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador and as a leader in the U.S. civil rights movement in the 1960s, lending his support to Nobel Peace Prize-winner Martin Luther King Jr.

The Andersen ambassadors are named to help promote the upcoming bicentennial of the Danish fairy tale writer, renowned for his children's stories, including the classics The Little Match Girl, The Ugly Duckling and The Red Shoes.

Born in 1805, Andersen was the son of a poor shoemaker's apprentice and a charwoman. He died in 1875.

Other ambassadors include American singer Suzanne Vega and actors Harvey Keitel, Connie Nielsen and Susan Sarandon, Brazilian soccer star Pele, Australian runner Cathy Freeman and Chinese basketball star and Houston Rockets centre Yao Ming. On July 9, Brazilian singer and culture minister Gilberto Gil was picked and received a diploma in Copenhagen.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - International celebrities, music stars, athletes and Danish royals will attend a four-day carnival next spring that will start a year-long international celebration of the bicentennial of Hans Christian Andersen, Denmark's famous fairy tale writer, officials said Wednesday.

The March 31-April 3 events in Copenhagen and Andersen's native Odense are "expected to reach the scope of the opening ceremony of Olympic Games," said organizer Christian Have. "It will the biggest celebration of a single cultural personality the world has ever seen."

Pop singers and rock stars are expected to appear in a concert at Copenhagen's 40,000-seat Parken stadium on April 2 - Andersen's birthday. The show will be aired live on Danish television and repeated on other networks worldwide.

Queen Margrethe, members of the royal family and some of the more than 60 Andersen goodwill ambassadors named since 2002 are expected to attend the different events, including birthday parties for children, lectures on some of Andersen's 156 fairy tales, new plays based on some of his stories, official receptions and fireworks.

The list of ambassadors includes Chilean novelist Isabel Allende; British actress Elizabeth Hurley; American singer Harry Belafonte; singer Suzanne Vega; actors Harvey Keitel, Connie Nielsen and Susan Sarandon; Brazilian soccer star Pele; Australian runner Cathy Freeman and Chinese basketball star Yao Ming.

Andersen, born in 1805 to a poor charwoman and a shoemaker, is famous worldwide for his fairy tale classics including The Emperor's New Clothes and The Little Mermaid.

Jubilee organizers have a budget of 200 million kroner ($43 million Cdn) to finance the four-day celebrations plus other events during 2005, including plays, theatre, dance, multimedia, music, exhibitions and educational activities in Denmark and abroad.
