What happened to the U17 team? Canada has a small population, and their national games are hockey and curling.

IT'S NOT SURPRISING AT ALL !!! Rolling Eyes

Due to its proximity to USA, Canadian youth baskeball had developed very fast with highly competitive leagues and alot of up-and-coming prospects. Some of its players study and play in US High School League too.

And Canada 17 had beaten China U17 in previous 2009 FIBA U17 Championship. And that China U17 team featured some of the best basketball prospects of China of that age group like Guo Alun, Wang Zhein, Li Muhao, Wang Zirui, Luo Hanshen, Sun Tonglin, Zhai Xiaochuan, Zhu Xuhang, Xu Tao.

And in the just concluded 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship,
Canada U18 beat Argentina U18 TWICE in the preliminary group, and then in the bronze medal game to win bronze, and therefore qualified for 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship in the Czech Republic. This marks the fourth consecutive time Canada was able to qualify for the FIBA U19 World Championship.

If the CNT can include Chris Tang, they can play better. It looks like Chris Tang is better than any of the U17 CNT guards.

Note that China often treats preliminary tournaments such as this as practice. Note that they started Yang Linwei as point guard instead of star Zhao Jiwei. Yang has never started in international competition before. He needed experience for when competition in the FIBA championship is played for real. Liu Bo, who is the starting power forward, also did not start. Again the backups had to be given a serious taste of international competion so that they would be ready for the World Championship. Don't read too much into this result.

The lad's name is Yang Linyi, and he is from Dongguan New Century Leopards.

And I think the reason why he got the starting position had alot to do with the recent head coach change of the U17 national team.

The China U17 national team had changed their head coach to Wang Jianjun who used to be the assistant coach for Wu Qinglong, the original U17 head coach, who had returned to Liaoning to become their head coach to replace Guo Shiqiang, who had been sacked and back to the Liaoning provincial sports bureau.

Wang Jianjun used to be assistant coach to Brian Goorjan of Dongguan New Century Leopards for the last couple of years, as well as the head coach for Dongguan's junior team, and he likes Yang Linyi alot.

That's probably WHY he opted for Yang Linyi, a Dongguan player instead of Zhao Jiwei, a Liaoning player.

Another humiliating defeat by the Croatian U17 team in Game 2 of th U17 international tournament in France: Mondial de Basket de Douai yesterday: 101 ~ 58.

The starting 5 were Yang Linyi, Wang Zhengbo, Han Delong, Liu Bo and Zhou Qi.

China fell behind from start to finish; they were only 9 points behind by half time (15 ~ 22 by 1Q, 28 ~ 37 by half time.) But then the whole team crumbled in 3Q, and soon the Croatians put the game beyond their reach by end of 3Q, leading almost 30 points (66 ~ 39). After that, it was just matter of how many points the Croatians, the 2010 FIBA U16 European Champion wanted to win.

Zhou Qi played 20 minutes, scored 12 points (5/11 FG% 2/6 FT%), 5 rebounds and 3 block shots;

Ma Bin: 10 points/5 rebounds; Liu Bo: 7 points/8 rebounds; Han Delong: 8 points/2 rebounds/2 assists; Heng Yifeng: 7 points; Guo Xiaopeng: 6 points/3 rebounds; Yang Linyi: 4 points/4 rebounds; Xu Ziyang: 4 points; Zhao Jiwei:DNP.

Seems like China loses their practice games... and then when the real competition starts - they lose those games too. I kinda expected more out of this China U17 team since they have Zhou Qi. This team probably got complacent after their tournament win in Turkey last year.

Well, you have to understand that ONLY 5 players of that U16 national team that played in last year's Turkish Telecom International Invitational remains with the current U17 national team.

There are 7 new players in the team. And they are playing under a new coach, no longer Wu Qinglong but Wang Jianjun.

Unlike those young players in Europe that play all year long in competitive league games, these Chinese young players had not much competitive games throughout the year. Maybe playing with their respective CBA junior teams in the month-long national youth league in the summer, or against inferior competitions in those exhibition game series arranged as their build-up during their 3 months' long closed door training. But then in the national youth league, it was almost always those few strong junior teams of Guangdong Dongguan Bank Hongyuan Tigers, Dongguan New Century Leopards, or Liaoning Jiebao winning slope-slided games over other CBA junior teams.

And as I mentioned, Croatia was the champion in last year's 2011 FIBA Euro U16 Championship, and ALMOST the full team got promoted to their current U17 nationl team, and they have the #1 ranked young player of Class 1995, Mario Hezonja, and a couple top prospects/talents.

#7 Liu Kaiqi, Hebei, 1.96M, SF, 1995
#8 Zhang Zuming, Bayi, 2.02M, SG, 1995
#9 Guo Xiaopeng, Dongguan, 1.97M, SF, 1995 #10 Zou Yuchen, Bayi, 1.97M, PF, 1996
#11 Shi Deshuai, Tianjin, 2.0M, PF, 1995

Why don't the CBA organize a league for the young players so that can play more competitive games throughout the year?

Where are those other U16 players from 2011? Do they got promoted to U19 team?
But this is just an excuse. Players from any country got promoted from U16 to U17 and then U19 etc. So this happens to any team, players got promoted to the next team, but it seems the other countries always have better and younger players to replace the previous players.

Well, they have a national youth league in the summer but that last maybe a month long.

And as I mentioned the quality/standard of that league is pretty low, as it is always dominated by those few CBA teams that are willing to spend and invest in young players, teams like Guangdong Dongguan Bank Hongyuan Tigers, Dongguan New Century Leopards, or Liaoning Jiebao. Strong teams like Guangdong can thrash other CBA junior teams with winning margins of 40 to 50 points.

Some of those players are considered over-aged to stay in U17, therefore they move on. They might be promoted to China U18 or simply no longer with the national team but back to their original junior teams, waiting for their chances to be promoted into senior team once they reach 18 years old. But not everyone is as lucky as Guo Ailun, Sun Tonglin, Li Muhao, or Zhai Xiaochuan, and alot of them might just rot in the junior team, and never got promoted.

Personally don't think it's an excuse.

Say let's take Croatia as an example.
Most if not all their current players on the U17 team roster are promoted from U16, the 2011 FIBA Euro U16 Champion.

Therefore they are more cohesive as a team with more team rapport and chemistry.
Adding 1 to 2 new player is DIFFERENT to adding in 7 new players.
