China U17 lost a heart-breaker to Canada 68 ~ 64 in the 5th ~ 8th Classification game, and therefore lost the chance to create history to make #5 or #6 in an international tournament.
As I've analysed earlier, this China U17 is just structured pretty imbalanced, with only 2, at best 3, good players, with very weak bench. Once the opponents subdued Zhao Jiwei or double-teamed Zhou Qi, the rest of the U17 seemed not able to step up to shoulder the team.
China U17 team dug out a hole for themselves in this game, felling behind by 9 points (14 ~ 23) in 1Q, and by 11 points (25 ~ 36) by half time.
They spent the 3Q doing the catch-up and managed to tie the game 42 ~ 42 by end of 3Q.
But when everyone thought the momentum had shifted to China, they struggled to get ahead in early 4Q, and fell behind to 9 points by the 3 minutes; Canada just kept that 8 to 9 point margin until the 1 minute mark.
Even though Zhou Qi and Guo Xiaopeng both scored 3-pointers to get the game back to a 3-point game, it proved to be TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE.
But then once again, the lads can walk away with their heads up, as they proved they had game and can compete with some of the best youth teams in the world. It was already much better than the humiliated defeat (76 ~ 99) by the same Canadian team in the U17 international tournament in France: Mondial de Basket de Douai in late June. |

Zhou Qi was once again the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for China in this game with the HIGHEST EFFICIENCY rating of 31.
He was pitched against Tanveer Bhullar, the 7 ft 3 Indian Canadian , younger brother of the 7ft 4 Sim Bhullar. And throughout the game, he was double-teamed by his opponents and his team mates had difficulties to pass him the ball.
But neverthless, Zhou Qi ALMOST scored a TRIPLE DOUBLE of 21 points (8/15 FG% 2/2 3-pointer% 3/5 FT%), 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, 4 turnovers and 8 block shots in 31:30 minutes of action !!!!
Compared to him, Tanveer Bhullar SUX. He only scored 8 points (4/12 FG% 0/2 FT%), 8 rebounds, 1 block shot in 26 minutes of action.
Guo Xiaopeng also scored 21 points (7/16 FG% 2/7 3-pointer% 5/6 FT%), 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block shot.
Zhao Jiwei on the other hand played VERY BAD in this crucial game; he bricked most of his shots, scored only 5 points (1/10 FG% 0/5 3-pointer% 3/4 FT%), 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals but 5 turnovers.
The China U17 lads were out-rebounded by their Canadian counter-parts; they only grabbed 34 rebounds (11 O 23 D), compared to 49 rebounds (20 O 29 D) by the Canadians; Even though their FG%, in particularly their 3-pointer %, were lousy: 23/66 (35%) FG%, 5/23 (22%) 3-pointer% 13/18 (72%) FT%, they still out-scored the Canadians who had even poorer FG%: 24/78 (31%) FG%, 1/14 (7%) 3-pointer% 19/26 (73%) FT%. But the Canadians had 34 points in the paint, compared to 22 points by China, 14 second chance points to 9 points by China, and 12 points off turnovers to 9 points by China. |

China U17's 7th/8th classification game with Czech Republic is currently in progress.
5 minutes mark in 3Q. Czech Republic led by 2 points. 50 ~ 48, riding on a 5 ~ 0 run.
China U17 fell behind by 5 points (20 ~ 25) by end of 1Q, and was at one point trailing by 12 points in 2Q. But they did well in the last 11:30 minutes, had a 8 ~ 0 run and took a 1 point lead into 3Q. (39 ~ 38 ). |

4 ~ 0 run by Czech Republic in early 4Q.
They now led 63 ~ 59.
Zhou Qi was heavily double-teamed by the Czechs; he sort of lost his touch and feel and only managed 6 points now, missing alot of his shots (1/6 FG% 4/4 FT%). He had 7 rebounds and 4 block shots up till now. |

FAILED !!!
Yao Ming NEVER played for China U17 team.
In fact, there was NO SUCH THING as FIBA U16 Asia Championship or FIBA U17 World Championship until recent years. |
