Chen Jianghua, Ding Jinhui, Guo Ailun, Liu Wei, Sun Yue, Wang Shipeng, Wang Zhizhi, Yi Jianlian, Yi Li, Max Zhang Zhaoxu, Zhou Peng and Zhu Fanyu made the team.
Wang Zhelin, Zhang Bo and Su Wei are not there.
So the surprise is that Guo Ailun is in while Wang zhelin is not given a chance to showcase his skills. |

Well, today is the last day that EVERY national team has to submit to the State General Administration of Sports the names of the athletes that are going to London for their final endorsement/approval.
So CBA submitted these 12 names.
But according to Bob Donewald Jr. this might not be the final roster. If there will be injuries or other accidents, the roster could still be changed.
In fact, Bob Donewald Jr. will still bring along 14 players (probably Su Wei and Wang Zhelin, cos Zhang Bo is still recovering and not 100% healthy with his shoulder injury) to play their last 2 warm-up games in Poland. |

Well, the dropping of Wang Zhelin was NOT EXACTLY a SURPRISE !!!
The selection of the Final 12 is with DUE CONSIDERATION of the style of game of the other teams in Group B.
The defending champion Spain is TOO STRONG for China to even strive for a win.
But other than Spain, the remaining 4 teams are BASICALLY pretty relying on their exterior players rather than having strong and physical interior players.
Since the retirement of Yao Ming, China had sort of abandoned their traditional half-court offensive schemes. Insteads they stressed alot on playing defense and relied on fast counter-attacks. They sort of returned to the pre-Yao era of smaller, faster and more flexible basketball.
Bob Donewald Jr. seldom paired Wang Zhizhi and Yi Jianlian together, as we all knew Wang Zhizhi is getting older, and he is known to be not paying much emphasis and effort in defense. Wang Zhizhi will most likely start from the bench and lead the non-starters in offense.
Instead of playing big centres and power forwards, Bob Donewald Jr. likes to use 1 big + 4 smaller players. He therefore very often used defensive-minded players like Ding Jinhui, Zhou Peng or even Yi Li as power forwards to play alongside Yi Jianlian or Wang Zhizhi as centres so as to offload blue-collar defensive workload from Wang Zhizhi or Yi Jianlian (such that they could focus on offense more), and to create space and room for their external shooters like Zhu Fangyu, Wang Shipeng or Sun Yue by their without-ball movement.
The choice of Max Zhang Zhaoxu over Su Wei and Wang Zhelin is SIMPLY because of his height, his defense and his shot-blocking ability.
Even though Wang Zhelin is of immense talents and potentials, he is still too young, rather weak in upper body and no good in defense. He had been criticized several times by Bob Donewald Jr. of this glaring weakness.
As for Su Wei, even though he is strong and powerful, and pretty good in defense, he seemed to be lacking self-confidence and going down slope the past few months. Moreover, he is a liability in offense, pretty foul-prone and could not even do proper PNRs with the guards as well as Max Zhang Zhaoxu. |
